A member of the cactus family, Pitahaya is commonly known as “Dragon Fruit” because of it’s dramatic green dragon like scales on it’s outer skin , it’s inner flesh is soft, gelatinous and spoonable with a very subtle perfumed and slightly sweet , comparable to kiwi when ripe. The fruit peels as easily as a banana . A native of Central America, but cultivated extensively in Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. Because of their epiphytic nature it is best recommended to grow in a soil supplemented with high amounts of organic material and coarse riverbed sand for good drainage. Besides the exceptional fruits, they produce sweet scented, funnel-form, nocturnal white flowers. It is best to train on trellis as it is a segmented cactus vine and tends to wander. Dragon fruit is getting increasingly popular as gardeners are discovering what a fabulous and delicious fruit this is. Zones 8 and higher , partial to full sun , train to size.
